Avid hikers travel long distances to enjoy the fantastic trails and the views that they provide in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. You can take a day hike, or one that entails one or two nights camping in the scenic mountains.
Two favorite trails are the West Fork of the North Fork of the Big Wood River and the North Fork of the Big Wood River – which share a common trailhead. The North Fork takes the hiker from alpine forests to rocks. You will travel through meadows of wildflowers, pass by pristine mountain springs, and find vast views of the surrounding rugged scenery.
On the trail up the West Fork of the North Fork of the Big Wood River, the hiker will find similar scenery – alpine forests, rugged rocky mountains, meadows and sub alpine scenery. The mountains along this trail are not as large and the canyon is smaller.
Either trail is a great way to enjoy the natural surroundings found in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
