Big Wood National Recreation Trail

There are many excellent hiking trails in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Many photographers and wildlife viewers take their cameras along on the trails that fan throughout the area. From a casual hike along the Big Wood River to a challenging scramble to the highest alpine lake, you will find the perfect trail for any age group and level of experience.

Avid hikers travel long distances to enjoy the fantastic trails and views provided within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. You can take a day hike or venture out on a multi-night backpacking adventure in the scenic mountains.

Two favorite trails are the West Fork of the North Fork of the Big Wood River and the North Fork of the Big Wood River – which share a common trailhead. The North Fork takes the hiker from alpine forests to rocky peaks. You will travel through meadows of wildflowers, pass by pristine mountain springs, and find vast views of the surrounding rugged scenery.

On the trail up the West Fork of the North Fork of the Big Wood River, the hiker will find similar scenery – alpine forests, rugged rocky mountains, meadows and sub alpine scenery. The mountains along this trail are not as large and the canyon is smaller.

Either trail is a great way to enjoy the natural surroundings of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
