Located north and east of the City of Boise, Idaho, the Boise National Forests includes portions of the White Clouds and Frank Church Wilderness areas of Idaho. Primarily a mountainous area, the Boise National Forest contains the Boise and Payette River, and the South and Middle Fork drainages of the Salmon River. more info

The mountainous landscape of the Boise National Forest was formed when the earth crust was shifting over thousands of years. The ground is a geologic formation that is easily eroded by winds, erosion and mountain streams.

The majority of the land is covered by confer forests including ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, Engelmann spruce, lodge pole pine, grand fir, sub alpine fire, western larch and white bark pine. Non-forested areas are covered with shrubs and grasses and wildflowers bloom with brilliant colors in all areas.

The area of the Boise National Forest that is located near Sun Valley has become known for great outdoor recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, rock climbing, wildlife viewing and back country skiing. The rivers and streams provide an excellent habitat for various species of fish – enticing anglers to come and visit. Large game is also prevalent in the forest.
