Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway
Designated as a Scenic Byway in 1977, the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway extends 131 miles from the Capital City of Boise, Idaho east toward the Sawtooth Wilderness area and beyond to the Wood River Valley. There are many attractions, as well as fantastic scenery, all along the Byway. The Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway starts in Boise, Idaho and first travels to Idaho City, a historic mining town on Idaho Hiway 21 to the north. From Idaho City, you travel on to the little community of Lowman and from there to the charming mountain community of Stanley.
The trip between Lowman and Stanley is exceptional, as the roadway is placed between two of the wilderness areas of Idaho. On one side is the Sawtooth Wilderness Area and on the other is the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. The Sawtooth Wilderness Area has 217,000 acres of ponderosa pine and wild rivers. The Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area has more acres of road-less wilderness than anywhere else in the lower forty-eight states – at least 2.3 million acres.
From Stanley on south into the Wood River Valley, you will experience breath taking scenic views and unsurpassed opportunities to get away from the crowds and relax. This scenic byway offers the traveler awe-inspiring scenery, adventure and solitude. The attractions along the way provide a multitude of things to see and do.
