What to Bring

Enjoy your time in Sun Valley by packing the essential items and being prepared for the weather.

Sun Valley is named for the unusual number of days that the sun shines on this beautiful mountainous region of Idaho. Despite the sunshine, the weather can be brutally cold in the winter, but pleasantly warm in the summer.

July is the average warmest month with temperatures ranging from 43 degrees F to 82 degrees F. The highest recorded temperature was 98°F in 2002. On average, the coolest month is January with temperatures ranging from 4 degrees F to 32 degrees F. The lowest recorded temperature was -37°F in 1990.

Whether you’re planning a visit in summer or winter; you need to be aware that the weather is constantly changing. You should also take into consideration what you plan to do while in the area.

Essential items to bring regardless of the season:

  • sun glasses
  • sunscreen
  • binoculars
  • camera

If you are planning some outdoor fun in the summer, you should be sure to be prepared for plenty of sunshine. Sudden thunderstorms are not unheard of, so a rain jacket is also a good idea. The nights often turn cooler than you would expect, so bring a light jacket or a warm long-sleeved shirt.

Summer Packing List

  • comfortable hiking boots or shoes
  • sun hat or baseball cap
  • insect and tick repellent

When coming to Sun Valley in the winter, it's most likely for a skiing trip or other snow adventure. Don't forget those warm mittens or gloves, and be sure to pack some wool socks. You should bring enough clothes so you can layer them to stay the warmest you can be.

Winter Packing List

  • warm clothes
  • good winter coat
  • winter hat
  • gloves/mittens

Depending on your mode of transportation, you may want to bring your sports or adventure gear along or you can plan to rent the required equipment from the various retailers and rental outlets in the area. Even if you failed to pack some needed clothing, toiletries or other gear, you can get these items at various shops around town.
