Little Wood River

The Little Wood River is known for its rainbow and brown trout and is a picturesque desert stream. The Little Wood is created by Silver Creek which flows into it southeast of Picabo, Idaho. This popular fishing spot is a little of a hidden secret as you are likely to be the only fishermen.

The Little Wood River offers miles of available fishing and is generally the best in June and late summer and fall. The river contains different types of water such as fast water riffles and deep pools where the big browns tend to live. Located in the desert south of Carey, Idaho, it is hard to see the river among the lava rock and sagebrush. Yet, the Little Wood is a beautiful freestone stream full of fat trout. The lava rock makes for easy wading and creates deep pools and pocket waters. Stoneflies tend to come out in the spring and taper off in June with the hatch of hoppers. Locals advise the use of common hopper combinations to lure big brown trout. The fishing day is cut short in August as air and water temperatures warm. There is one section of the Little Wood that is catch and release called the Taylor/Williams Recreation area.
