Mountain Lakes & Streams

Idaho is famous for its trout fishing in its many rivers, streams and mountain lakes. Well known and highly praised streams are scattered throughout the state as well as the 1,500 mountain lakes. Many of these high lakes require hiking but are open to public access.

Some of the most well known trout streams include Henry's Fork, Silver Creek and the St. Joe River. While these areas are popular, there are also plenty of other smaller streams that do not attract the crowds though still promise good fishing. Surrounding the South Fork and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, there are many smaller streams that are full of trout. Fly fishing guides are extremely knowledgable about these areas and are usually fished as a day trip. Also, Indian Creek and Lower Pistol Creek are known for their trout. Idaho's mountain lakes usually require a hike in, yet provide a scenic and solitary fishing experience. For instance, it is hard to even find a trail up to No Name Lake yet the cutthroat fishing is extraordinary with its deep green water. Middle Lake and Fish Lake are in the same area and offer a similar remote experience. The mountain lakes are a rare treat but make sure you know where you are going.
