The Salmon River flows through central Idaho's Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. This wilderness area is the largest in the continental US spanning an incredible 2.5 million acres. The Salmon is famous for its steelhead and trout fishing. The river is divided into the North, Middle and South Forks, all of which are popular for fishing and recreation.
The Salmon River winds through some of Idaho's most remote and extraordinary wilderness. Large sections of the river are roadless and access is only possible by boat. Though there are also plenty of opportunities for bank and wade fishing. The Salmon flows through the second deepest canyon in the US. Fishing on the Salmon River is available for most of the year. Steelhead fishing is the best in February to late March and then again in October until the winter freeze. The fish range in size from 4 to 16 pounds and trips are usually done on jet boats. Summer is the time for trout fishing and guide companies boast that up to 100 fish have been caught in a single day. Much of the fishing on the Salmon is catch and release. The most common catches are rainbow trout and westslope cutthroat which range in size up to 19 inches. In near by lakes and streams rainbow, cutthroat, brook and steelhead trout are found along with other species.
