Sun Valley is a mecca for outdoor recreation. Primary among the many activities enjoyed in the area is hiking and backpacking. Hiking is just walking but with the goal of exploring and enjoying the scenery. If you hike and stay overnight, then you are actually backpacking.
Hiking or backpacking is a fundamental outdoor activity on which many others are based. The remote, wilderness area surrounding Sun Valley has many beautiful areas, which can only be reached by trail. For most hiking enthusiasts, hiking is the only way to see nature. There are no distractions when you are hiking and you can get a true sense of your surroundings.
Check with the local Ranger Stations or the Sawtooth National Recreation Headquarters for information on the hiking and backpacking trails in the area. Plan ahead for safety and always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
