Ketchum Idaho Activities

If you are expecting world-class skiing and fantastic opportunities for other types of recreation when you visit Ketchum, Idaho, you will not be disappointed.  Surrounded on all sides by some of the country’s most awe-inspiring terrain, this is the place for great outdoor adventures.  The eclectic community also has a great selection of art, dining, and other indoor activities.

Location is everything, not only in real estate, but also when it comes to great travel activities.  Ketchum is ideally located to offer many and varied opportunities for great travel fun. The road through town is a national scenic byway; a major national forest lies to either side; and to the north is the pristine wilderness of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

Of course, the world-renowned ski slopes are the primary attraction.  Bald Mountain boasts of 3,400 vertical feet of slope.  There are plenty of ski lifts so the wait to get to the top of the mountain is never long.

Other travel activities include –

  • Biking – The same terrain that made the area great for skiing also makes it a mountain bike destination.  The mountains in the area are shaped with near perfect slopes making for well graded climbing and fast “no brakes needed” descending.
  • Canoeing/Kayaking/White-Water Rafting – This area is home to more navigate-able white water than any other.  Come to Ketchum and let any of the local businesses or the local themselves point you in the right direction! 
  • Fishing – Come cast your fly into some of the most pristine fishing waters in the world.  World-class fishing and adventure await you in the Ketchum area.
  • Hiking – If you want to get up close to nature, the best choice is hiking.  However, it is not necessary for you to do all the “heavy lifting” yourself.  A popular activity is day hikes with llamas.  Hikers are accompanied with trained guides through many of the scenic wilderness area and the llamas carry everything.
  • Horseback Riding – with so much terrain to explore you might want to opt for an animal guided tour.  Horseback riding outfitter are ready to take you wherever you would like to go on a multi or single day trip. Both hiking with llamas and horseback riding are great family activities. 
  • Sightseeing – There are various parks and attractions to see in the Ketchum area.  This includes drives along the scenic byways, visits to local museum, strolling through local art galleries and simple enjoying the ambiance of the old west along Main Street.

One of the best things about enjoying any of the great activities in the Ketchum area is re-hashing your day’s adventures over a cold drink later in the evening.  The town of Ketchum is the focal point for activity in the Wood River Valley and has plenty of places to enjoy a good meal and a good drink in the evening.
